Solar and Geomagnetic activity and how it plays into paranormal occurrences
A large theory (and some believe) out there is that paranormal entities (ghosts, spirits, etc.) are at least in part based on or composed of energy. The theory is strongly supported with many documented encounters that correlate with measurements of relatively high or abnormal energy levels (electrical, magnetic, thermal, etc.) during an investigation. One theory is that the entity somehow taps into available and / or ambient sources of energy, drawing from these to allow the entity to manifest and / or carry out an action (speak, move something, make a noise, etc.).
A general sociological paradigm of energy is that it is only associated to electricity. Though it seems everywhere we turn, our lives are encased by electrically energized sources. However, there are other sources of energy that are just as much in play and similarly potent while occurring naturally. Solar & geomagnetic energy are two such sources that tend to go hand & hand with supernatural phenomena.
Solar Energy
When we think of solar energy, we most commonly think of it simply as light. We're not far off; while light is a component of solar energy, the sun also emits a constant stream of highly charged particles that shower the Earth everyday: X-Rays, Gamma Rays, Cosmic Rays, Alpha radiation, etc. It is these high energy particles that interact with the atmosphere and the Earth's natural magnetic field that cause such phenomena as the Aurora Borealis a.k.a. "Northern Lights".
Earth naturally protects us from better than 99% of these particles with its magnetic field as well as filtering by the atmosphere itself. In the field of paranormal research it is theorized that ghosts / spirits possibly use this constant shower of high energy particles as an energy source to manifest and / or carry out an action (speak, move something, make a noise, etc.). Solar energy does not maintain a constant level. This also offers an explanation for why a paranormal experience doesn't continue endlessly. The sun has periods of higher intensity emissions at certain times than during others. "Sun spots" and "solar flares" are specific periods of higher, more intense energy emissions.
It is these reasons that the Paranormal & Occult Research Team keeps a vigilant eye on solar activity during our investigations. This information is provided by NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) by satellites in orbit. The different NASA solar activity classifications.
The following is from the N3KL website.
The X-ray solar status monitor retrieves data periodically from the NOAA Space Environment Center FTP server. The previous 24 hours of 5 minute Long-wavelength X-ray data from each satellite is analyzed, and an appropriate level of activity for the past 24 hours is assigned as follows:

Solar X-ray flux is quiet (< 1.00e-6 W/m^2)

Active: Solar X-ray flux is active (>= 1.00e-6 W/m^2)

M Class Flare: An M Class flare has occurred (X-ray flux >= 1.00e-5 W/m^2)

X Class Flare: An X Class flare has occurred (X-ray flux >= 1.00e-4 W/m^2)

Mega Flare: An unprecedented X-ray event has occurred (X-ray flux >= 1.00e-3 W/m^2)
The designation "Mega Flare" was chosen by Kevin Loch when the status monitor was created on March 4, 1999. There is no "official" designation for flares in this range.

Staying aware of solar activity during investigations helps you to determine whether or not it correlates with increased paranormal occurrences.
Geomagnetic Energy
As mentioned above, the Earth has its own naturally occurring magnetic field. This magnetic field is generated deep inside the Earth. Scientists theorize (no one has been the thousands of miles to the Earth's core to know for certain) that molten metal flowing and swirling around itself under intense heat and pressure (and probably high natural radiation) form a massive electromagnetic field. This is the field that causes compasses to point North.
For the paranormal investigator it is theorized that paranormal entities might be able to tap into the Earth’s magnetic field as a constant energy source. As with solar activity, geomagnetic activity isn't constant. There are periods of greater electromagnetic emissions than others. NASA also monitors and tracks this data. The following is from the N3KL website.

Quiet: the Geomagnetic Field is quiet (Kp < 4)

Active: the Geomagnetic Field has been unsettled (Kp=4)

Storm: A Geomagnetic Storm has occurred (Kp>4)
As with solar activity by noting geomagnetic activity during our investigations we hope to determine whether or not there is in fact a clear correlation between increases in paranormal activity and geomagnetic activity.
